Dr Yuichiro Anzai

Dr Yuichiro Anzai graduated from Keio University in Tokyo and received a Ph.D. in engineering from Keio in 1974. He started his career as a post-doc in cognitive and computer sciences and became a visiting assistant professor at Carnegie Mellon University. He has been working on human and machine learning, and human-robot-computer interaction for over 40 years. He taught at Keio University, and Hokkaido University, and spent some years as the Dean of Keio’s School of Science and Technology (1993-2001). He then became the President of Keio University (2001-09). He was the President at JSPS (2011-18), the representative research funding agency of the Japanese government.  Presently he is engaged in giving advice, as the chair of the Council for Artificial Intelligence Strategy, to the Japanese government for making strategic policies. Dr Anzai published several books including ‘Recognition and Machine Learning’, and numerous reviewed articles including ‘The theory of learning by doing’. More recently, in 2018 he submitted a dissertation on the relationship between cognitive science and epistemology to Keio University, and received a Ph.D. in philosophy. He was awarded the title Person of Cultural Merit by the Japanese government for his pioneering work on the integration of cognitive and information sciences.
